Here is a brief story of a friend Lee Jenkins who was a product of a single parent home. He was raised by a single parent mum in the poorest parts of London; involved in gangs, drugs and the usual bad things, but turned away for his passion for animals! As a boy I was told “ you are so thick you’ll never achieve anything” this was by my math teacher at my secondary school, as it happened I was severely dyslexic and ironically the main cause of this was having an high IQ. I went on to leave school without a single The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) to my name. Since then, I’ve worked in several zoos being head keeper of two, travelled and worked in Africa including living with elephants in a swamp and have been a teacher for eight years teaching GCSE science and animal management up to foundation degree level without a degree or any formal teacher training. Today, I have been accepted on a Master of Science (MS) course in ecological consultancy, this is the beginning of a new era for me and I have several ecology firms interested in employing me in the near future. The point of this is to say to those of you out there who think or have been told they can’t do it, that you can if you really want to….. The only thing stopping you is you!
